About Us

The Institute of the Incarnate Word was the first branch of the Religious Family of the Incarnate Word to be founded by Fr. Carlos Miguel Buela in 1984.

The Institute which draws its spirituality from the mystery of the Incarnation, was founded on the Solemnity of the Annunication, March 25th, 1984 in San Rafael, Argentina. A few years later Fr. Buela would also found a female branch the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará (SSVM), and a secular Third Order.

By means of the profession of the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, we want to imitate and follow more closely the Incarnate Word in his chastity, poverty and obedience. In addition, we profess a fourth vow of Marian slavery, according to the spirit of St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort. By means of this vow, we consecrate our whole lives to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

    Provincial News

    • Opening of New IVE Monastery

During the mass homily, given by His Excellency, Bishop Edward Scharfenberger, at Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine in Auriesville, NY.

March 25th, 2017 marked an historical moment for the Institute of the Incarnate Word (IVE) as it was a double occasion for a celebration in the Province of the Immaculate Conception (IVE USA Province). The province, in communion with entire Incarnate Word Family, celebrated the thirty-third anniversary of the foundation of the Institute. In addition to this commemorative moment, the province also had a new reason for celebration; the inauguration of its first IVE Monastery in the providence, located in Auriesville, New York; bringing the number to a total of seven IVE monasteries throughout the world.

    • Popular Mission in Wauchula, Florida

The blessing of the cross at the end of the Mission; outside the Parish of St. Michael in Wauchula, FLorida.

Every year the novices from the St. Isaac Jogues Novitiate House have their annual Lenten Mission, usually at parish of the Institute. This year the popular mission was held in Wauchula, Florida at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, an IVE parish and extended from February 25th to March 5th. Fr. Javier Ibarra, the novices, and novices of the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará (SSVM) spend their time in Wauchula spreading the Good News and bringing people back to the faith especially during this Lenten season in which we seek God’s mercy and forgiveness.

    • March for Life & IVE Winter Youth Festival

IVE priests, seminarians, religious and youth, at the conclusion of the March for Life, gather for a final group photo in front of the Supreme Court.

This year marked the 44th anniversary of the Supreme Court case Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion in the United States. Every year since then people have gone to Washington, D.C. to protest in defense of human life. This year, in comparison with last year, due to weather inconveniences, the march was significantly much more well attended as tens of thousands of people came to Washington Mall to March pro-life. The Institute of the Incarnate Word (IVE) as every year seeks to make a good turnout. This year about 270 IVE youth attended March for Life and/or the 3rd Annual Winter Youth Festival. The Institute had youth from all over the USA; coming from Alabama, New York, Florida, Wisconsin, Pennsylvanian and Connecticut, some even came from Canada.

    Institute of the Incarnate Word

The Institute of the Incarnate Word offers the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola to the laity to help them grow deeper in their spiritual lives. The Spiritual Exercises do this by assisting the exercitants (i.e. those who take the exercises) to, in the words of St. Ignatius, "conquer themselves" and then shows them how to conform their will to the will of God.

Throughout the course of the Spiritual Exercises the exercitants will be given the tools which will help them to discern the Will of God in their own lives. This makes the exercises especially useful for, but in no means restricted to, those who are discerning their vocation.

St. Ignatius composed the Spiritual Exercises over a period of 19 years (1522-1541) and has ever since been one of the most powerful means of sanctifying members of the Church, whether lay or religious. This is most clearly expressed by Pope Pius III  when he declared, " We have found that these Exercises are full of piety and holiness and that they are and will be extremely useful and salutary for the spiritual profit of the faithful....We earnestly exhort all and each of the faithful of both sexes, everywhere to employ instructions and Exercises so pious and to be instructed by them." (Pastoralis Officii, 31-VII-1548)

The members of the Institute of the Incarnate Word (IVE) take an abbreviated version of the exercises annually and take the full 30 day exercises once every ten years. They are offered for the laity in different parts of the country in both English and Spanish throughout the entire course of the year. Usually the exercises are offered in an abbreviated three day version which contains the essential meditations and rules provided by St. Ignatius. He understood that not all would be able to put their lives on hold for a full month in order to take the exercises and so, even in his life, St. Ignatius made accommodations for shorter retreats.

For more information on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola you can read more about it in the Catholic Encyclopedia.
